"Oh, I never let my children hug me before I have a shower and changed my uniform." You've all heard it, right? You know you are in a potentially dangerous working style. Nobody wants MRSA, VRE, C-Diff or other bacteria in their homes!
Patients are sick today. Germs are more virulent. So I've put together 9 easy steps to keep hospitals away from your car and home.
It's pretty easy, let's get started!
First – To avoid letting slim carpets touch the inside of the car or home, get a pair of slip-on shoes, such as the Crocks Slip-On Fashion Sneakers from Amazon. Always use your slip-on to drive to and from work.
Other – While at home, place your clean care shoes inside a clean plastic bag. And do not put them on before you reach your car park at the workplace. So your care shoes will always travel in a bag – whether it's clean on your way to work or dirty on your way home.
Third – At the end of your change, and once you have clocked out, find a blank bathroom. Take plastic bags with two gallons, your antiseptic cloth, plus your bag of street clothes in there with you.
Fourth – Place your badge, stethoscope and everything from your pockets on a pile of paper towels. Consider it all contaminated. Wash your hands. Then carefully clean each element with antiseptic wipies and place it all in a clean plastic bag.
Fifth – You get up to work clean. But after a 12-hour shift – none of us want to consider what's on the uniform. Do not wear it at home! Instead, just pull it off and put it in the plastic patch bag.
Sixth – Next wash your hands, arms, face and neck – and put some clean street clothes on your clean bag. I highly recommend using bags with ziplock tops for good closure, speed and ease of use. Save the plastic bag in your pocket when you get to your car and change shoes.
Seventh – How are you sure to clean your mobile phone? You know you've touched it while you're at work. Some have been known to put it in a fresh ziplock sandwich bag before each shift – and throw the dirty plastic bag at the end of the day.
BUT it may be more socially acceptable to consider getting one of the watertight phone protectors on the market. Since they are waterproof, they can be washed. Here is an example: DandyCase Neon Colors Waterproof bag for all phone types from Amazon. You can wash it down with antiseptic wipies when you clean your other pocket items.
Eighth – Your work bag and ziplock bags with content can come into something like a washable plastic Rubbermaid Mini Basket from Amazon and placed in the trunk of your car.
Ninth – When you're home, clean your uniform in warm soapy water, clean your shoes and get your shower. It is always best to kill all bacteria as quickly as possible.
Then you ready? By spending only a few extra minutes, you will better protect yourself and those you love of potentially dangerous pathogens! What a great way to protect your home, your car, your family and yourself!
